New Technique Identified For Breast Cancer | SHM News

breast cancer

In Australia researchers from CHUM research center (CRCHUM) and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center have identified a new treatment for treating breast cancer. As per the statistics the over expression of a particular type of protein (human epidermal growth factor-2) is mainly responsible for the development of cancer cells in nearly 20 to 30 percent of breast cancer patients.

For several years the known treatment for this cancer was Herceptin. And it is known that it blocks the activity of this protein which causes breast cancer, but the exact working of Herceptin has remained a mystery.

According to researchers in addition the blocking of cell proliferation, Herceptin also stimulates the production of interferon, which is responsible for activating immune cells known as lymphocytes.

And the new study supports it because when lymphocytes are present in tumors it enhances the success of treatment.

Stagg who is affiliated with the Faculty of pharmacy at the University of Montreal says ?These findings open another avenue for breast cancer treatment for nearly a third of all women who are affected?.
