According to a "top secret" National Security Agency (NSA) document, the US bugged the offices of European Union member state offices in Washington and at the UN and gained access to computer networks used at those locations. The latest report revealing spy activities by the NSA comes from German news magazine Der Spiegel, which says it saw parts of documents in whistleblower Edward Snowden's possession. Snowden was also behind leaks that revealed the NSA's massive PRISM program, designed to spy on internet users, as well as documents that shed light on the British government's involvement in the program.

Europeans called out as a "target"

Today's leak, according to the Der Spiegel report, reveals that NSA efforts to spy on European Union representatives in the US granted access to conversations as well as emails and other documents stored on computers used at locations in Washington and the United Nations. Europeans were apparently specifically mentioned as a target in the source document, which is dated from September of 2010. The spying methods resemble those reportedly used by the British at the 2009 G20 Summit in London, which saw the UK's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) tap into phones and computers used by heads of state. That surveillance campaign was uncovered by a separate Snowden leak earlier this month.

In addition to NSA efforts to listen in on EU representatives in the US, the agency is said to have spied on telecommunications at the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels (pictured above), where the Council of the European Union sits. EU member states have offices at the building with internet connections and phone lines, and it's presumed that the NSA tapped into at least some of those communications. It's not clear if this information comes from the same document, but Der Spiegel reports that five years ago security officers at the Justus Lipsius building traced some missed calls to NSA offices at a NATO building in Brussels.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, engaged in breakneck shuttle diplomacy to coax Israel and the Palestinians back into peace talks, is flying to the West Bank on Sunday to have a third meeting in as many days with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

U.S., Israeli and Palestinian officials have declined to disclose details of the past three days of closed-door meetings, but Kerry's decision to fly from Jerusalem to Ramallah, West Bank, to see Abbas again before he leaves the region was an indication that the secretary believes there is a chance of bringing the two sides together.

"Working hard" is all Kerry would say when a reporter asked him at a photo-op whether progress was being made.

Despite the lack of readouts, there are several clues that the meetings have been more than routine chats.

Most of Kerry's meetings have lasted at least two hours and several of them were much longer. His initial dinner meeting Thursday night with Netanyahu was clocked at four and the one Saturday night with the Israelis that started around 9 p.m. in a hotel suite was still going on at 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Legal, military and other officials accompanied Netanyahu at the meeting, perhaps an indication that discussions had reached a more detailed level.

Kerry canceled a visit to Abu Dhabi on his two-week swing through Asia and the Mideast because of his extended discussions on the Mideast peace process in Jerusalem and Amman, Jordan.

And just the sheer number of meetings since Thursday ? three with Netanyahu and soon-to-be three with Abbas ? could indicate that the two sides are at least interested in trying to find a way back to the negotiating table.

A senior U.S. State Department official said Kerry would travel to Ramallah on Sunday to meet Abbas. The U.S. official was not authorized to discuss the negotiations by name and requested anonymity.

The meeting, however, will further squeeze Kerry's itinerary. He's scheduled to be at a Southeast Asia security conference on Monday and Tuesday in Brunei ? some 5,400 miles from Israel. On the sidelines of the conference, Kerry is to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an exchange that likely will focus on National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. Kerry also is to have a trilateral discussion with Japanese and South Korean officials that likely will include the topic of North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

For now, however, Kerry has his head in the Middle East. Except for quick flights to meetings in Amman, Kerry mostly has been holed up on the upper floors of a hotel near Jerusalem's Old City engaged in deep, serious conversations about the decades-old conflict. On other floors, the hotel has been hosting large family gatherings, and noisy children in party clothes have been running up and down the hallways, oblivious to Kerry's presence.

There is deep skepticism that Kerry can get the two sides to agree on a two-state solution. It's something that has eluded presidents and diplomats for years. But the flurry of meetings has heightened expectations that the two sides can be persuaded to restart talks, which broke down in 2008, at the least.

So far, there have been no public signs that the two sides are narrowing their differences.

In the past, Abbas has said he won't negotiate unless Israel stops building settlements on war-won lands or accepts its 1967 lines ? before the capture of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem in a Mideast war that year ? as a starting point for border talks. The Palestinians claim all three areas for their future state.

Netanyahu has rejected the Palestinian demands, saying there should be no pre-conditions for talks.

Abbas made significant progress with Netanyahu's predecessor, Ehud Olmert, in talks in 2007 and 2008, but believes there is little point in negotiating with the current Israeli leader.

Netanyahu has adopted much tougher starting positions than Olmert, refusing to recognize Israel's pre-1967 frontier as a baseline for border talks and saying east Jerusalem, the Palestinians' hoped-for capital, is off the table. Abbas and his aides suspect Netanyahu wants to resume talks for the sake of negotiating and creating a diplomatic shield for Israel, not in order to reach an agreement.

Abbas has much to lose domestically if he drops his demands that Netanyahu either freeze settlement building or recognize the 1967 frontier as a starting point before talks can resume. Netanyahu has rejected both demands. A majority of Palestinians, disappointed after 20 years of fruitless negotiations with Israel, opposes a return to talks on Netanyahu's terms.

While details of the ongoing discussions have remained closely held, it has not quelled speculation. Midday Saturday, news reports said a four-way meeting was going to be held in coming days with the U.S. Jordan, Israel and the Palestinians at the table.

"They're saying a four-way summit, did you hear that?" Netanyahu asked Kerry during a photo-op before his latest meeting with Kerry.

"I did," Kerry replied.

There is speculation that talks are going well and that they're headed nowhere.

Asked if the two sides were close to resuming negotiations, Israeli Cabinet Minister Gilad Erdan told Channel 2 TV: "Regrettably, so far, no."

Wall Street falls as technology stocks drag

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks opened lower on Friday, as weakness in technology shares outweighed gains in other shares spurred by relief a premature pullback of central bank stimulus measures was unlikely.

The S&P 500 had risen 2.6 percent over the prior three sessions as economic data and comments from U.S. Federal Reserve officials soothed worries over an earlier-than-expected reining in of stimulative bond purchases by the Fed.

U.S.-listed shares of Research in Motion plunged 27 percent to $10.57 after the BlackBerry maker offered few signs of a long-promised turnaround on Friday. It reported an unexpected quarterly operating loss, a dearth of details on sales of its make-or-break new line of devices and no return to profit expected in the current quarter.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment was 84.1 points, slightly below a near six-year high of 84.5 in May. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a final June reading of 82.8.

The S&P 500 index is currently up 2.1 percent for the quarter and 12.4 percent for the year, its best first-half performance since 1998, though it is on track for its first monthly loss since October.

Investors can expect a surge of volume at the close Friday when Russell Investments is due to set the final update for the annual reconstitution of its indexes.

Molycorp Inc jumped 6.8 percent to $5.99 after the rare earths producer said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission completed an investigation into the company and didn't recommend enforcement action.

Arch Coal Inc gained 2.2 percent to $3.68 after the company agreed to sell its Canyon Fuel subsidiary for $435 million in cash.

Store brand, generic OTC pain relievers almost always have the exact same dosages and active ingredients of their name-brand counterparts (the FDA makes sure of that). Even so, consumers have proven they still have a hard time passing up recognizable brands like Tylenol and Advil in favor of cheaper generics.

The study finds:

In a case study of headache remedies, we ?nd that?college education, working in a healthcare occupation, and other proxies for product knowledge predict?more purchases of private labels relative to brands. Pharmacists devote almost 90% of headache?remedy purchases to private labels, against 71% for the average consumer. ...?We conclude that a signi?cant share of the willingness?to pay for brands in these categories would disappear in a world where consumers were fully informed.

The implication is that there's no reason for Tylenol and Advil to cost more money than off-brand equivalents except for the fact that they're brands and they spend a lot of money to advertise. It's the same deal as paying double for a box of name brand cereal when a generic storebrand box costs less and tastes about the same. You're paying more for advertising than quality.

Even though generic ("private label," or store brand) pain relievers account for 71% of the quantity of purchases, they only represent 49% of the dollars spent on OTC pain relievers, according to the study. They're significantly cheaper than the name-brand stuff.

Matt Yglesias at Slate writes: "One moral of the story is that advertising works. Nobody I know thinks advertising works on them or on anyone else. But it?s clear that even when marketers?don?t?have any meaningful information to convey about why you should buy their product, investments in branding nonetheless move purchasing decisions."

It's important to note that this same logic might not always apply to prescription pharmaceuticals?and other types of medicine (this study primarily addresses headache remedies). But considering that so many pharmacists shun brand-name OTC pain relievers in favor of generics, this could be an obvious place for people to save money on a common household item.

Are You A 22-22-22 Employee? | TalentEgg Career Incubator

I had not seen or heard from my friend Meggan since she accepted her new job until a week ago when she sent me a text message inviting me to go see a movie.

When I checked the time stamp on the text message she had sent, it read 1:30 am. When we met for the movie, I asked Meggan why she was up at 1:30 am, and she revealed that, like many members of Generation Y, she had become a ?22-22-22? employee.

Born between 1981 and 2000, the 12 million Canadian members of Generation Y?have accepted working hours and conditions that have coined a new catch phrase in the workplace ? ?22-22-22? ? meaning a 22-year-old willing to work 22-hour days for $22,000 a year.

Although the exact figures may differ from workplace to workplace (especially the 22-hour workday), the trend for members of Generation Y is to work more hours, at different locations, through different means, and often for less money.

While these arrangements may help the 22-22-22 employee get a foothold in the workplace and gain experience in their chosen fields, there are important employment law implications that should be addressed by both employees and employers. Here is a snapshot:

Health and safety in the workplace

The 22-22-22 arrangement may result in increased claims for benefits for fatigue, disability or psychological harm associated with working long hours, with little pay and little security.

While volunteers and apprentices are not covered by the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (?ESA?) or the worker?s compensation regime in Ontario, employers still have general responsibility for the health and safety of volunteers and apprentices, visiting or ?helping out? in their workplaces under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Overtime and digital labour

The ESA sets limits to the number of hours employees can work, which the 22-22-22 employee (working the ?22-hour? workday) easily surpasses, creating entitlement to overtime. ?With certain exceptions such as doctors, lawyers, mushroom growers (seriously!), this entitlement cannot be bypassed by providing salaries or giving an employee the title of ?manager.?

What may also add to the overtime claim of the 22-22-22 employee is the extent to which hours spent on emails, blog or Facebook posts, and tweets will constitute ?work? for the purpose of compensation and overtime. It is not yet clear, unless it has been included in the employment contract, if social media work is compensable.

How to cope with the 22-22-22 arrangement

Clear employment contract

It is important to set out (either at the beginning of the relationship or through amendments) the framework for the employment relationship, with a particular emphasis on what is included and excluded (and not compensable) under the employment contract.

As a best practice, digital labour, and to what extent a 22-22-22 employee is responsible and compensated for it, should be addressed as part of the employment contract. ?With the reliance on digital devices, it may now be suitable to have this conversation when negotiating the terms of an employment contract.

Whether or not digital labour is included in an employment contract, a 22-22-22 employee should keep clear records of digital activity connected to their employment in order to seek compensation for this work.

Overtime pay

Unless exempted from overtime hour provisions under the ESA, employees should request payment for overtime hours or take advantage of time off in lieu of overtime pay. ?It is important to also keep in mind that an employer cannot intimidate, fire, suspend or otherwise punish a 22-22-22 employee if he or she refuses to work more than the maximum daily (eight hours) and weekly hours (48 hours) of work.? If this happens, a 22-22-22 employee can file a complaint with the Ministry of Labour or seek legal advice with respect to their options.

Accommodation

Where the hours and demands of the job, coupled with obligations outside of work, are having an effect on psychological and physical well-being, the 22-22-22 employee may want to canvass the potential for accommodation (i.e., flex time; working from home, etc.).

Keep in mind, however, that accommodation requests should be based on a legitimate need rather than preferences, and may also require supporting? documentation. If the request for accommodation is denied, seek out the reason(s), and determine if they are based on legitimate grounds. Keeping in mind that the accommodation process is a two-way street, which requires that the employer and employee work together, will allow this process to be more successful for both parties.

Constructive dismissal claim

If the employee (unwillingly) becomes a 22-22-22 employee over time, and it is through the employer?s modification (or addition) of duties, the 22-22-22 employee may have grounds to refuse the additional work, and treat the employment contract as if it is at an end.

Remedy for constructive dismissal (i.e., reasonable notice payment) exists only if the employer?s actions significantly and qualitatively changes the employment relationship (i.e., substantial change(s) in pay, duties, hours). This is a major step, and should not be taken lightly and without legal advice.

With permanent employment becoming more elusive, 22-22-22 employment arrangements may be an acceptable option for many young employees. However, ignoring one?s rights for a job, without at least having an awareness and/or conversation about one?s legal entitlements and options, may not be the foundation on which to develop an entire career.

FORTUNE ?The nation's highest court on Wednesday struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which barred the government from recognizing same-sex unions in federal law. While gay rights advocates rejoiced at the decision, it's also a win for some of America's biggest corporations struggling to keep talented employees with foreign-born same-sex spouses.

For Americans and legal immigrants in traditional marriages, obtaining a green card for a foreign spouse is relatively easy.

Traditionally, American citizens have been able to sponsor their foreign-born spouses for residency visas, known as green cards. But under DOMA, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans did not have the same right. And as a result, U.S. businesses have watched as some of their most talented employees leave to live with their foreign-born partners abroad.

In March, 28 U.S. companies signed off on a letter urging Congress to recognizesame-sex unions for immigration purposes. Texas Instruments (TXN), US Airways (LCC), Marriott International (MAR) and others said making it possible for foreign-born spouses to live and work in the U.S. makes business sense. Companies go through the expense of relocating gay and lesbian employees, only to lose them because of their spouse's visa problems. "We cannot afford to lose our most precious resource: talent," the letter stated.

The barriers have also hindered companies from taking on new workers. According to a recent survey by the American Council on International Personnel, an association of employers that advocates immigration reform, 42% of member organizations said they have missed out on hiring opportunities because U.S. immigration law precluded the prospective employee from bringing his or her same-sex partner into the country.

Many binational same-sex couples chose to live abroad rather than in America. Martha McDevitt-Pugh, for instance, spent many years working at Silicon Valley-based Informix Software, where she ran the database software firm's education and publications arm. Managing a department of eighty people, she was a key player in overseeing the company's reorganization ahead of its later split and acquisition by IBM. But when it was time to choose between her career and her same-sex partner, an Australian-born woman living in the Netherlands, she reluctantly decided to leave her job and take her talents overseas.

Some same-sex couples have found ways to live together in the United States. When former U.S. Representative Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) could not sponsor his Panamanian partner, Hector Alfonso, for an American visa, Alfonso successfully applied under the EB-5 investor visa program. This program grants visas to individuals who make a substantial capital investment (over $500,000) in America that creates or preserves at least ten jobs. Kolbe acknowledged in an interview that he and Alfonso had to dig into their retirement savings to pursue this option, and that it would not be economically feasible for most couples.

Before Wednesday's ruling, Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont pushed an amendment to the immigration bill that would have removed such hurdles for binational same-sex couples seeking to live in America. The Leahy Amendment would have effectively recognized same-sex unions in the context of immigration law, but it faced massive bipartisan opposition, including some from Democrats who supported it in principle but feared that it would kill the immigration deal.

Leahy had offered his amendment again. But with the court's decision, the issue is moot. The ruling will allow LGBT Americans to sponsor their legally married partners for visas under the expedited track federal immigration law provides for spouses of U.S. citizens.

Nonetheless, Corporate America's support of the principles of the Leahy Amendment highlights a massive shift in public opinion as more and more Americans support legal equality for gays and lesbians. "What's notable?is that global companies are leaders" on this issue, said Rachel Tiven, Executive Director of Immigration Equality, an LGBT rights advocacy group. "They are way out front in saying that what they care about is, are you good at your job?"

McDevitt-Pugh, at least, is eager to return to the United States. She misses the "entrepreneurial opportunities" available in America, she said in an email. "Opening up immigration to LGBT families [will] stop the brain drain of talented Americans."

NEW YORK (AP) ? A funeral service for actor James Gandolfini is scheduled to take place in one of New York City's largest churches.

The ceremony at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday. It comes after a private wake for the former star of "The Sopranos" on Wednesday in New Jersey.

The 51-year-old actor died of a heart attack last week while vacationing in Italy with his son.

Broadway theaters paid tribute by dimming their lights briefly Wednesday night. Gandolfini was nominated for a Tony Award in 2009 as an actor in "God of Carnage."

House Republicans Feel No Pressure to Pass Immigration Reform

Republican House members are not willing to consider legislation that legalizes millions of undocumented immigrants, no matter how loud the Senate crows over a big bipartisan vote on immigration reform or how aggressively Democrats try to shame them. At least not yet.

The immigration grand bargain that won Senate approval Thursday on a 68-32 vote will have to stay idling by the curb until House Republicans conclude it's politically safe to move forward. Right now, Republicans say they face nothing but reprisal from their home districts if they vote for anything that includes a path to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants. "The Right hates this," said one GOP aide.

Getting from Point A, Senate passage of a major immigration overhaul, to Point B, House approval of a bill whose next destination is a White House signing ceremony, is a challenge that has stymied proponents of reform all year. In the beginning, they were hoping that House Speaker John Boehner would be willing to allow a bill to pass with more Democratic votes than Republican votes. That opportunity, if it ever existed, has disappeared. Rank-and-file Republicans have repeatedly extracted assurances from the speaker that he won't flout the GOP majority's views on immigration. Boehner this week reiterated his promise that any immigration legislation emerging from the House would have support from a majority of Republicans.

Next, some proponents have floated the idea that the House could pass an immigration package that includes provisions unpalatable to President Obama and Democrats and excludes pieces they consider essential, such as a path to citizenship. They would settle for this outcome for the sole purpose of the House passing something?anything?that would get them to a conference committee with the Senate. In theory, the deal-breaker provisions could be erased in the conference negotiations.

That strategy isn't flying with Democrats. Here's just one example: House Republicans say that allowing local law enforcement to apprehend and detain unauthorized immigrants is critical to enhancing border security. Democrats reject that idea without blinking. "No," said Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., a lead sponsor of the Senate bill, when asked if Democrats could accept that provision as part of a comprehensive package. "Look, I have opposed that forever, because even the toughest law enforcement will tell you that you undermine the confidence of communities to talk to local police."

Democrats have other demands. Anything short of eventual, full citizenship for undocumented immigrants would trigger protest marches from liberal activists. And House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has made it clear that immigration negotiators are not to touch Obama's health care law, which means Republicans who want to ban health care subsidies for green-card holders are out of luck.

The situation becomes a stalemate: Deal-killer provisions for Democrats are essential components for Republicans.

There may be another way to get to Point B, but it is based on the questionable proposition that the House GOP would work its will at first and then be willing to compromise later. The House Judiciary Committee has readied a series of smaller immigration bills?on local law enforcement, agricultural workers, electronic verification, and high-skilled visas?that could see floor votes in July. Assuming they pass, Republicans say they could package them as an opening bid for conference negotiations with the Senate.

Thus far, however, the list of House bills doesn't include anything that legalizes the undocumented population, ignoring the top demand from both Democrats and Obama. What's more, the bills have not passed the committee with Democratic votes. It's hard to convince bipartisan reformers that they should back a strategy in which House GOP leaders have to rely solely on Republican votes. The farm bill's downfall last week erased what little faith they might have had in such a plan.

So what's next? Members "have to get beat up a little bit at home" before a vote on a major immigration bill is even possible, said one GOP aide close to House leaders. So far, that's not happening. "My constituents all like what we're doing," said Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., who chairs the Judiciary Committee's Immigration Subcommittee. "They like the fact that you're giving scrutiny to each component, as opposed to saying, 'We hope that you like this enough to overlook the fact that you don't like this at all.' "

The Senate's comprehensive immigration bill is exactly the kind of grand compromise that rank-and-file House Republicans are assiduously avoiding. They see Republican senators giving away a path to citizenship, desperately sought by Democrats, in exchange for promises of tougher enforcement?a bad deal, in their eyes. "Oh, they hate it, my constituents," said Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah.

It's hard for reform advocates to fathom that the GOP rejects what they see as an obvious truth?either immigration reform passes or Hispanics ditch the Republican Party forever. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid calls House Republican opponents "the crazies."? Congressional aides supportive of reform efforts shake their heads in disbelief, urging reporters to ask Republicans what they propose to do about 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a supporter of a path to citizenship, says opponents of immigration reform hurt the GOP's image with Hispanics. "It's hard to sell your economic agenda if they think you're going to deport [their] grandmother," he said.

But such arguments don't seem to have much traction in the House. To wit, ultraconservative hard-liner Steve King, R-Iowa, is feeling pretty good. "I was a lonely guy two months ago," the congressman said of his protests against bipartisan groups in the House and the Senate crafting big immigration bills. "Lots of people said, 'You can't stop that.? Now I'm juiced. I'm going to go try out for the Redskins."

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., and MARINA DEL REY, Calif., June 26, 2013 Los Alamos National Laboratory and Tribogenics, the pioneer of innovative X-ray solutions, have partnered to create a unique, lightweight, compact, low-cost X-ray system that uses the MiniMAX (Miniature, Mobile, Agile, X-ray) camera to provide real-time inspection of sealed containers and facilities. The innovative technology will be featured at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Conference on Nuclear Security: Enhancing Global Efforts, July 1-5, in Vienna, Austria.

"Cost and portability are the major barriers to expanding the use of X-ray imaging," said Scott Watson of Los Alamos's Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation Division. "We designed MiniMAX to demonstrate that such a system will open up new applications in security inspection, field medicine, specimen radiography and industrial inspection."

Los Alamos has developed MiniMAX as an alternative to the large, expensive and fixed facilities presently required for security inspections using X-ray imaging. The complete MiniMAX portable radiography system weighs less than five pounds, compared to much larger and heavier systems currently available.

Los Alamos Physicists demonstrated MiniMAX using a conventional X-ray source, a radioisotopic source, and a prototype source from Tribogenics operating at 90 keV. The Los Alamos team used the Tribogenics source to produce an X-ray image of a hand-held calculator.

"We were delighted when Los Alamos approached us to explore a partnership," said Carlos Camara, Chief Scientist at Tribogenics. "This is exactly the type of breakthrough, portable application we envision for our disruptive X-ray technology."

Ultramarathoners: Faster, Higher, Stronger And Sleepier

In the decidedly nutty sport of ultramarathoning, the stakes keep getting higher. The courses get longer and the terrain steeper, but runners continue to push the boundaries of human endurance and sheer will.

So a team of researchers in exercise physiology led by Jonas Saugy, of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, explored what happens when these ultra-long-distance runners, whose muscles are already fatigued, are also deprived of sleep.

To do this, they found a group of hardcore runners at the Tor des Geants, a particularly excruciating race in the Italian Alps. These volunteers were willing to be poked, prodded, and covered with electrodes in the name of science while competing.

What the researchers found was that these runners experienced significantly less overall muscle fatigue by the end of the race than a similar group at a race of only half the distance.

The Tor des Geants is unique in that the clock is continuously running. So unlike races, such as cycling's Tour de France, that are run in daily stages over predetermined distances, these runners have to figure out when to sleep and for how long.

The Tor des Geants lasts days. And the runners are often in a state of intense sleep deprivation. In 2012, the average racer finished in 107 hours, with only nine hours of sleep.

To test muscle fatigue under the Tor's extreme conditions, Saugy's team administered a battery of tests before, during and after the race.

Volunteer sat upright in a chair equipped with straps, pedals, strain gauges and electrodes. A series of leg and ankle extensions tested the runner's voluntary muscle strength. To test involuntary muscle strength, electrodes zapped the runners' muscles and the researchers measured the reactions.

Tor runners experienced a roughly 25 percent loss in muscular strength compared with a loss of 35 percent in a shorter race over equivalently difficult terrain.

Saugy says the Tor runners' preservation of muscle strength can be explained by pacing strategy, including sleep breaks during the middle of the race.

"They try to run a maximal distance in a minimal time, which involves a great deal of sleep deprivation," he says. "In the second half of the race, the runner's speed decreases significantly, and this decrease of speed involves a decrease of intensity and therefore a preservation of muscle tissue."

The overwhelming exertion in the first half of the race also means that runners sleep a lot more in the second half, which helps to preserve their muscles.

It's been well-documented that muscle fatigue in long races reaches an eventual plateau, but these new results surprised Saugy. "I thought that the decrease of force would stay at this plateau, but I was surprised to see that we found less fatigue after this race," he says.

Shots spoke with Leadville Trail 100 veteran and running coach Scott Weber about his experience on an ultramarathoning circuit lasting days. "A regular runner should plan to cover 55 percent of the distance in half of their realistic goal time, and 45 percent in the second half," he says.

At one point in his career, Weber completed a quadruple solo crossing of Badwater, one of ultrarunning's most notorious gauntlets. "Usually after 20 hours of running I would get so sleepy that I couldn't go on," he says. "So, I would lay down and sleep with the idea that I could sleep as long as I wanted, but the second I opened by eyes I would immediately start moving."

And how much shut-eye did this mean for Weber? "Generally I would sleep extremely soundly for 15 to 30 minutes," he says.

But analyzing the body's response to these challenges only tells you so much about these extreme runners. "Ultramarathoning is an expression of the soul of the runner, their tenacity, their will to go beyond their perceived limits," Weber says. "It's more important than the physiology. It's about what's inside, and you see that at the finish line."

Wall St. advances in rebound off recent weakness

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose solidly on Tuesday, partially recovering from recent steep declines as strong data pointed to improvements in the economy.

Equities were volatile for much of the session, as the data initially raised concerns about central bank stimulus, but analysts said a rebound was due coming off a large drop in Monday's session, which itself followed the worst week for the S&P 500 since April.

"Everyone panicked after the Fed, but the fear is starting to come out of the system now. Investors are realizing that the Fed is still a long way from raising rates," said Mark Foster, who helps manage $600 million at Kirr Marbach & Co in Columbus, Indiana.

The recent downturn in markets started after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke last week said the Fed's stimulus program may be scaled back this year if the economy improves, placing traders in a paradoxical situation where good data could indicate less stimulus, which would in turn be a threat to growth.

Data on durable goods orders and new home sales in May, and consumer confidence in June, all topped analysts' expectations. The April Case/Shiller report on home prices also was above forecasts.

Housing stocks were among the strongest of the day, surging on the data as well as because Lennar Corp posted strong results and the company pointed to a "solid housing recovery." The stock rose 1 percent to $35.34 while peer homebuilder PulteGroup Inc was up 3.9 percent at $19.02. The PHLX housing sector index <.hgx> climbed 1.7 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 95.22 points, or 0.65 percent, at 14,754.78. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 11.58 points, or 0.74 percent, at 1,584.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 16.45 points, or 0.50 percent, at 3,337.21.

While the S&P is up 11 percent in 2013, the recent trend has been negative, with the benchmark index dropping below both its 14-day and 50-day moving averages, seen as signs of near-term market direction. It is down about 2.6 percent in June.

"The market trend has turned to the downside. It is now easier to sell rallies than to buy dips," said Donald Selkin, who helps oversee $3 billion in assets as chief market strategist at National Securities in New York. "If we close lower today, that would be a big blow to the bulls."

The S&P on Monday closed at its lowest level since April 22 after China's central bank said the country's banks need to do a better job of managing their cash and due to continued worries about a reduction in stimulus from the U.S. Federal Reserve.

On Tuesday, the People's Bank of China said it would not press banks too hard in its efforts to curb easy credit and prevent a possible banking crisis.

Carnival Corp jumped 4.4 percent to $34.68 after the cruise ship operator named a new chief executive and affirmed its full-year profit outlook.

On the downside, Walgreen Co slumped 7.6 percent to $44.38 as the worst performer on the S&P 500 after reporting weaker-than-expected results, citing slow front-end sales and a challenging economy.

Netflix Inc fell 2.1 percent to $211 after Bernstein downgraded the stock to "underperform."

Barnes & Noble Inc tumbled 18.5 percent to $15.33 after the largest U.S. bookstore chain reported its quarterly net loss more than doubled.

When I begin, I don?t know where I am going. Writing poetry is probably the only example in my life of that kind of risk. I?m terrified of change. I have fear when my daily structure is upset but here, working on my poems, I am able to practice risk, to enter not knowing and follow intuition: sound, music, movement. Not that entering the unknown isn?t also terrifying. It is. Writing is the one thing I put off doing. I can?t bear the thought of entering its rooms. I?d much rather waste my hours doing what I know: reading, cleaning the apartment, going online, daydreaming. To enter a poem is to enter a dream, awake.

But writing poems allows me mastery over a miniature universe. For those moments or hours, I am God of my kingdom. No one tells me how things go. No one can argue against me when I?m writing poems. When I am writing, I get to speak.

I utilize this same structure, this same control, in my poems. The poem must sing, it must have music. Music and language and beauty and a tear of darkness. In poetry, I take what I don?t know, and follow the music, the sound, until the thing becomes a warped little song. I make meaning out of chaos.

Leaked iPhone 5S Prototype Is Pretty Much Everything You'd Expect

It appears that the mystery chip from last week's (purported) iPhone 5S leak is a mystery no more. Thanks to MacRumors' new?and far better?photos of the new iPhone's backend, the chips is now clearly identifiable as a an A7 chip.

The real giveaway that this is not, in fact, just a modified version of the A6 chip that the current iPhone 5 packs is the new model number, APL0698. According to MacRumors:

The original A6 chip carried a model number of APL0598, with the A6X found in the fourth-generation iPad carrying an APL5598 model number, demonstrating how Apple varies the first digit for members of a given A-series family and increments the second digit when transitioning to a new family.

However, the chip's other markings tell us that although this is an upgrade, it's not a total overhaul of the A6?it appear we're still getting the same 1 GB of Elpida DRAM on the A7. Another interesting change comes in the K1A0062 identifier, which is different from the usual starting number of "N" that would signify a Samsung part. There'd been murmurings of a TSMC-made chip, and although we'd recently been led to believe that the switch wouldn't come until the A8, this certainly suggests otherwise.

So while sure, that means Apple really is finally breaking away from any real dependence on Samsung, this also tells us that Apple is moving further towards fully designing its own chip from the ground up?not just customizing someone else's parts to its own needs.

And thankfully, these image do seem to reconfirm that the next gen iPhone battery is at least a little bigger than what we have rapidly dying in our current phones. Plus, we've got an even clearer image of what is undoubtedly the highly coveted dual-LED flash.

Of course and as with any leaked images, there's always the chance that these don't actually belong to the phone we'll be seeing come (probably around) September-ish. [MacRumors]

ACA young-adult provisions shifting health costs to insurers ...

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) provision that allows adult children to remain on their parents? health insurance policies through age 26 shifted at least $147 million in health care costs from patients and hospitals to insurance companies in 2011, according to a RAND Corp. study.

?Insurance is doing its job and picking up those costs,? said Katherine Harris, a RAND senior economist.

The research, published in the May 30 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, found that emergency room visits by uninsured young adults between the ages of 19 and 25 dropped 9% in 2011, while emergency room visits by privately insured young people rose 5%.

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that the ACA?s dependent-coverage provision brought health insurance to about 3.1 million young Americans.

Plane believed to be carrying Snowden in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) ? A former National Security Agency contractor wanted by the United States for revealing highly classified surveillance programs has been allowed to leave for a "third country" because a U.S. extradition request did not fully comply with Hong Kong law, the territory's government said Sunday.

An Aeroflot flight from Hong Kong believed to be carrying Edward Snowden landed in Moscow. Russia's state ITAR-Tass news agency cited an unnamed Aeroflot airline official as saying Snowden was on Flight SU213, which landed on Sunday afternoon in Moscow. The report said he intended to fly to Cuba on Monday and then on to Caracas, Venezuela.

Snowden had been in hiding in Hong Kong for several weeks since he revealed information on the highly classified spy programs. The WikiLeaks anti-secrecy group said it was working with him and he was bound for an unnamed "democratic nation via a safe route for the purpose of asylum."

The White House had no immediate comment about the departure, which came a day after the United States made a formal request for his extradition and gave a pointed warning to Hong Kong against delaying the process of returning him to face trial in the U.S.

The Department of Justice said only that it would "continue to discuss this matter with Hong Kong and pursue relevant law enforcement cooperation with other countries where Mr. Snowden may be attempting to travel."

The Hong Kong government said in a statement that Snowden left "on his own accord for a third country through a lawful and normal channel."

It acknowledged the U.S. extradition request, but said U.S. documentation did not "fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law." It said additional information was requested from Washington, but since the Hong Kong government "has yet to have sufficient information to process the request for provisional warrant of arrest, there is no legal basis to restrict Mr. Snowden from leaving Hong Kong."

The statement said Hong Kong had informed the U.S. of Snowden's departure. It added that it wanted more information about alleged hacking of computer systems in Hong Kong by U.S. government agencies which Snowden had revealed.

The signal that Hong Kong had let Snowden go on a technicality appears to be a pragmatic decision aimed at avoiding a drawn out extradition battle. The move swiftly eliminates a geopolitical headache that could have left it facing pressure from both Washington and Beijing.

Hong Kong, a former British colony, has a high degree of autonomy and is granted rights and freedoms not seen on mainland China, but under the city's mini constitution Beijing is allowed to intervene in matters involving defense and diplomatic affairs.

Hong Kong has an extradition treaty with the U.S., but the document has some exceptions, including for crimes deemed political.

Russian officials have given no indication that they have any interest in detaining Snowden or any grounds to do so. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that Russia would be willing to consider granting asylum if Snowden were to make such a request.

Russia and the United States have no extradition treaty that would oblige Russia to hand over a U.S. citizen at Washington's request.

WikiLeaks said it was providing legal help to Snowden at his request and that he was being escorted by diplomats and legal advisors from the group. Its founder, Julian Assange, who has spent a year inside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden to face questioning about sex crime allegations, told the Sydney Morning Herald that his organization is in a position to help because it has expertise in international asylum and extradition law.

The Obama administration on Saturday warned Hong Kong against delaying Snowden's extradition, with White House national security adviser Tom Donilon saying in an interview with CBS News, "Hong Kong has been a historically good partner of the United States in law enforcement matters, and we expect them to comply with the treaty in this case."

Snowden's departure came as the South China Morning Post released new allegations from Snowden that U.S. hacking targets in China included the nation's cellphone companies and two universities hosting extensive Internet traffic hubs.

He told the newspaper that "the NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data." It added that Snowden said he had documents to support the hacking allegations, but the report did not identify the documents. It said he spoke to the newspaper in a June 12 interview.

With a population of more than 1.3 billion, China has massive cellphone companies. China Mobile is the world's largest mobile network carrier with 735 million subscribers, followed by China Unicom with 258 million users and China Telecom with 172 million users.

Snowden said Tsinghua University in Beijing and Chinese University in Hong Kong, home of some of the country's major Internet traffic hubs, were targets of extensive hacking by U.S. spies this year. He said the NSA was focusing on so-called "network backbones" in China, through which enormous amounts of Internet data passes.

The Chinese government has not commented on the extradition request and Snowden's departure, but its state-run media have used Snowden's allegations to poke back at Washington after the U.S. had spent the past several months pressuring China on its international spying operations.

A commentary published Sunday by the official Xinhua News Agency said Snowden's disclosures of U.S. spying activities in China have "put Washington in a really awkward situation."

"Washington should come clean about its record first. It owes ... an explanation to China and other countries it has allegedly spied on," it said. "It has to share with the world the range, extent and intent of its clandestine hacking programs."
