UK Internet group: Surveillance program in works

LONDON (AP) ? Every email to your child. Every status update for your friends. Every message to your mistress.

The U.K. government is preparing proposals for a nationwide electronic surveillance network that could potentially keep track of every message sent by any Brit to anyone at any time, an industry official briefed on the government's moves said Sunday.

Plans for a massive government database of the country's phone and email traffic were abandoned in 2008 following a public outcry. But James Blessing of the Internet Service Providers' Association said the government appears to be "reintroducing it on a slightly different format."

Blessing said the move was disclosed to his association by Britain's Home Office during a meeting in recent weeks.

Britain's Home Office declined comment, saying an announcement would have to be made to Parliament first ? possibly as soon as next month.

There was no indication of exactly how such a system would work or to what degree of judicial oversight would be involved, if any.

A Home Office spokesman insisted that any new surveillance program would not involve prying into the content of emails or voice conversations. "It's not about the content," the official said, speaking anonymously in line with office policy. "It's about the who, what, where and when."

In a statement, the Home Office said it's vital that police and intelligence services "are able to obtain communications data in certain circumstances to investigate serious crime and terrorism, and to protect the public."

Authorities already have access to a huge wealth of communications data, although the standards for retaining it differ depending on whether, for example, conversations are carried out over the phone, in an email, or over an instant messaging program.

Generally, authorities request such information during an investigation. A standardized mass-monitoring program capturing of every email, every post and every tweet would spell the creation of a formidable new surveillance regime.

"It is not focusing on terrorists or on criminals," Conservative lawmaker David Davis told the BBC. "It is absolutely everybody."

"Our freedom and privacy has been protected by using the courts by saying: 'If you want to intercept, if you want to look at something, fine. If it is a terrorist or a criminal, go and ask a magistrate and you'll get your approval.'

"You shouldn't go beyond that in a decent, civilized society, but that is what is being proposed."

Cost could be an issue as well.

Blessing said it would likely require the installation of tens of thousands of specialized pieces of hardware to monitor the country's Internet traffic. The price tag would run into the billions of pounds (dollars), a cost he said would either have to be borne by the taxpayer or by Internet service companies, who would in turn have little choice but to pass it on to their customers.

In either case, U.K. Internet users would be paying extra to allow their government to spy on them more effectively.

The revamped surveillance plans were first reported by Britain's The Sunday Times newspaper.

Yoga Under A Microscope :: Flow Yoga ? Leesburg, Virginia Yoga ...

The Science Of Yoga is the controversial new book by noted NY Times writer William Broad. In it, he examines some of yoga?s health claims as a wellness and fitness activity. The book has polarized the yoga community, and because of that I wanted to check it out. It debates, among other topics: should doctors prescribe yoga as a therapeutic solution? What is yoga?s exact relationship to diet and exercise? How does it affect our creativity, sex lives, healing and physiology? These are just a few of the interesting questions Broad raises in his efforts to illuminate, and provoke, his audience on the subject of yoga.

Broad begins his story by looking at yoga?s origins in India. Historically speaking, some of the first yogi?s were actually charlatans who would use their ability to slow their breathing and metabolism to trick the wealthy Maharajas into thinking they were dead for money! These tall tales, and negative perceptions of yogis, are, according to Broad, crucial to the beginnings of the scientific study of yoga around the turn of the 20th century. Broad profiles a handful of seminal figures, most notably a researcher named Gune, who first put yoga under a serious microscope in the 1920?s. Their work was what helped shift the concept of yoga away from these early stereotypes. In the 1930?s and 40?s, the scientific benefits of yoga evolved and eventually were used to promote a stronger sense of nationalism. Yoga helped India to gain a cultural foothold in its struggle to win its independence from Britain. Yoga studies have grown with technology, and the work continues today, evolving to help create our modern perceptions of yoga. Over the course of the last four decades, a new generation of experts are leading this research, and Broad breaks down their findings into six chapters: health, mood, risk to injury, healing, divine sex and muse. First, the bad news.

According to several recent studies, yoga did little in the lab to promote weight loss and aerobic fitness. Duke University and Texas State, among others, observed a handful of yogi?s moving through different poses, like the sun salutations, and found that yoga could not equal the exertions of a more conventional activity like jogging. Another of the more negative findings was that excessive yoga practice can lead to injury. Broad?s analysis pays particularly close attention to the neck, spine and back, and cautions his audience to be vigilant of these areas during practice. Headstand and wheel were found to be the most dangerous poses. There is also some evidence that yoga can contribute to strokes. His third most relevant finding is yoga?s lack of regulation in medicine. Clearly, yoga has grown exponentially over the last few years, but its infrastructure is still too broadly diffuse?to have constituted any type of central governing body. Without an official credentialing entity, yoga therapy should be looked upon as an unsubstantiated healing practice.

For all these negatives, Broad is still a huge proponent of yoga. His final chapter lays out an ambitious vision that calls for increased scientific research, the growth of yoga as an overall institution and greater mindfulness among its many practitioners. Several of the same studies that discount its benefits in fitness and aerobic exercise, scored it off the charts in terms of its ability to promote overall wellness in the yogis? studied. These people came away from yoga feeling exceptional in their mood and outlook. There is proof, according to Broad, that some yogic breathing patterns slow the metabolism, and lead to a calmness and peace, which few other activities were able to match. In terms of hormonal activity, certain poses were found to increase the amount of testosterone released by the body. Although these findings are not conclusive, there is some evidence to suggest that yoga can lead to a healthier sex life.

On balance, Broad probably raises more issues than he solves. It?s interesting to note that he himself suffered a serious back injury while practicing and perhaps this contributes to his messages of caution. Within the last two decades, yoga has received an incredible amount of amazing press and positive word of mouth: so much so that it?s developed something of a miraculous aura around it. Broad argues that our perceptions of yoga need to be properly examined. That it can?t be broadly adopted without considering the science that?s being conducted around it. It?s a good point to make, but one that often feels like basic common sense; the same responsible approach that any exercise regime demands. While The Science Of Yoga offers an interesting perspective, it doesn?t possess enough depth to merit the controversy it?s caused. Too many of its findings are narrow in scope and inconclusive. It represents a start to the discussion, not the final word. Broad, for instance, spends nearly two entire chapters out of six analyzing kundilini, yet nothing on hot yoga or ashtanga, two of the more aggressive forms of yoga. In many ways, yoga has simply become too big, and its scientific study needs to be conducted with a focus on all of its different styles. There are so many forms, and it?s such a personal experience, right now, Broad?s new book only proves the idea that it?s immeasurable.

Outsourcing Customer Care Services to Call Centers in USA

Customers are the pinnacle of success for all business organizations. They need courteous treatment to maintain their loyalty towards an enterprise. This necessitates the institution of reliable customer care centers. Businesses should establish a concrete mode of communication with their customers. Call centers stand out as one form of communication. These initiatives contain people on standby to attend to consumer needs. Many people call these centers for many reasons. Some people would call to make an inquiry while others contact a call center for financial services.

There exist numerous call centers in USA geared towards reaching out to their clients. Some of these telemarketers are in-house while some organizations elect to outsource these services. The outsourcing of services usually emanates from the desire to net the far-away markets. For instance, some London-based companies would entrust certain call centers in USA with the task of customer service. In this regard, the aim is to reach out to the American market. Understandably, outsourcing benefits the companies and the telemarketers. The organizations benefit through more customers while the latter starts a call center for financial services.

The process of outsourcing customer support services usually results in certain strategies. Ideally, the call centers in USA formulate various techniques depending on the need of the customers. Moreover, the modalities hinge upon the target markets of their clients. Most of these telemarketers must always be fluent in at least two languages. Bilingual constitutes a pivotal part of any center including a call center for financial services. It always comes in handy when the customers have scant knowledge of the predominant language. The employees would then translate the information into a comprehensible language for the customers.

Another component of outsourcing customer support is the servicing. Some organizations entrust call centers in USA with dispensation of skills concerning program management, data systems and quality assurance. These customer care-based firms also offer training and infrastructure for these ventures. Thereafter, their clients can handle this task appropriately and formulate their in-house call centers for financial services or administrative issues. The success of the relationship between outsourcing companies and their clients lies in the satisfaction of their customers.

Customers would only feel gratified if employees of the call centers have adequate knowledge about that line of business especially for a call center for financial services. Answering services demand that the respondents must be knowledgeable about the customers? queries. For instance, such organizations invest in various employees with different skills like medicine, finance and law among others. Thus, a finance graduate would efficiently handle a customer accessing a call center for financial services. Furthermore, the outsourcing always endeavors to remain an invisible phenomenon to the customer.
It is essential that they feel as if they are communicating directly with their company. In most instances, the outsourcing company would employ voice mail technology while talking to customers. This technology entails the formulation of a virtual receptionist where clients can deliver a voice message. Outsourcing customer service to call centers in USA and other countries is the in-thing when it comes to marketing. There exists a wide array of organizations specializing in varied customer services like call center for financial services. The onus rests upon organizations to seek out assistance from these numerous outsourcing-based call centers in USA and other areas.

Martin family lawyer known for civil rights cases

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? When Benjamin Crump got his first call from Trayvon Martin's father last month, the attorney counseled patience.

It had only been two days since a neighborhood watch volunteer had fatally shot the 17-year-old, and surely an arrest was imminent, thought Crump, who has pursued several civil rights cases against law enforcement agencies.

Another day passed. Nothing.

Two more days passed. Still nothing.

"I believed in my heart of hearts they were going to arrest him," Crump said Thursday in an interview. "I said, 'Oh, they are going to arrest him. You don't need me on this.'"

More than a month later, there still has been no arrest.

But thanks largely to Crump's efforts, the case has stirred marches and rallies around the nation, merited comment from President Barack Obama, led to the resignation of the Sanford police chief and brought scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice into this Orlando suburb of 55,000 residents.

"When you have the president commenting on the matter and you have celebrities and politicians wearing their hoodies as a symbol of the cause that you're representing, and it has taken over the world's attention, this is overwhelming in a sense," said Crump, who was in Washington for several days of meeting with members of Congress and appearing on national news shows. "We've been pushing relentlessly day and night."

Crump's strategy for making the case international news began with a series of heart-wrenching news conferences in which Martin's parents spoke about their loss. Florida media outlets began to notice. Then, he enlisted U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown to help convince authorities to release 911 tapes, recordings that brought the case to the attention of national media. He's further ratcheted pressure on authorities by organizing a series of rallies and working with national civil rights figures such as Al Sharpton.

The push began not long after Martin's death on the night of Feb. 26. Martin, wearing a hoodie, was walking home from a Sanford, Fla. convenience store when he was spotted by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who called a police dispatcher to report Martin as suspicious. There was a confrontation, and Martin was shot. Zimmerman has told detectives he shot Martin in self-defense.

Martin's death raises questions about the role of vigilantism, racial profiling and Florida's self-defense laws. Under those laws, a person isn't obligated to retreat in a threatening situation. Zimmerman's father has said his son wasn't profiling Martin and that he isn't racist. Zimmerman's mother is Hispanic and his father is white.

Crump was first contacted by a cousin of Trayvon Martin's father. The cousin, a Miami attorney, was familiar with Crump's civil rights work in Florida. Before Martin's death, Crump was best known for representing the parents of a teenage boy who died after an encounter with guards at a Florida boot camp in 2006. The videotaped beating of Martin Lee Anderson attracted national attention and led to the closure of the state's boot camps for juvenile offenders.

Crump, 42, and his wife, Genae Angelique Crump, are raising two teenage boys who are the biological sons of Crump's cousin. The oldest is Martin's age.

"Trayvon hits home on many levels," Crump said.

Crump and his law partner, Daryl Parks, are Tallahassee-based personal injury attorneys who primarily handle wrongful death and negligence cases. But their everyday work often involves civil rights issues.

"Daryl and Ben look at things in a broader perspective," said James Messer, a Tallahassee attorney who serves on the board of the Tallahassee Bar Association with Crump. "While there may be a wrongful death issue, it involves, in their eyes, more than anything a civil rights cause ... (Crump) has a passion for issues that have something to do with civil rights violations."

Crump's advocacy on behalf of Martin's family has gotten the attention of established civil rights leaders. Both Sharpton and Jesse Jackson flew down to Sanford to participate in rallies and a meeting before the Sanford city commission.

"He has integrity, smarts and an uncanny ability," Jackson said about Crump. "He is not flashy. He is just kind of a basic, old, solid-thinking, country lawyer."

Crump gets the "country" part from growing up in Lumberton, N.C., a tiny town not far from Fort Bragg. His mother held down two jobs as a factory worker and hotel housekeeper. His biological father was a soldier at Fort Bragg. He was raised by his mother and her high school sweetheart who later became her husband. Crump regards him as his father. The oldest of nine siblings and step-siblings, Crump grew up in an extended family of cousins, uncles and aunts headed by his beloved great-grandmother, Mittie.

"She had a switch in her hand when we came home from school. She would ask what we learned in school that day, and she used that switch to enforce the importance of that question," Crump said of his great-grandmother.

Crump would spend all day every Sunday in Pentecostal church, often missing the chance to watch his Dallas Cowboys play on television. The influence of the church is visible in his public speeches when he often sounds more like a preacher than a lawyer. His interest in civil rights stems from attending segregated schools until he was in fifth grade.

"It was a situation to me, that I said, 'Why do people on that side of the tracks have it so much better than people on our side of the tracks?'" he said.

When Crump was in high school, his mother sent him to Fort Lauderdale to live with the man he regarded as his father so he could have a male influence and be exposed to the culture that the bigger city offered.

He attended college and law school and Florida State University, where he met Parks, his future law partner. In his personal statement for law school, he said his hero was Thurgood Marshall, the U.S. Supreme Court's first black justice. After graduating, Parks and Crump formed their own law firm, Tallahassee-based, Parks and Crump.

Crump dodges the question of how, and if, he is being compensated by Trayvon Martin's parents.

"You do it because it's the right thing to do," he said. "As long as you make your goal to do right and do good, all of the money and financial material stuff will come."
