Some exercises yield more damage than progress ? Health ...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Maybe the biggest barrier to working out is time. Barrier, challenge, excuse?

So fitness trainers hate to see anyone frittering away precious workout periods or filling them with less-than-effective exercises. Actually, it makes them crazy.

We asked a few trainers to point out things they see in the workout world that they really wish they didn?t.

Perhaps a different exercise would be a better use of time. Or a certain exercise ultimately yields more injury and pain than progress. You might be surprised by their picks.

But first, let?s address the flagrant waste of workout time, and the chief culprit here is ? you guessed it ? the cellphone.

?It drives me bananas,? says John Benz, co-owner of CrossFit on 18th in Kansas City, Mo. ?If you can talk on the phone or text, your workout isn?t intense enough.?

Unless you?re taking a call from a patient or a babysitter or some other emergency ? ?Somebody better be dying on the other end? ? leave the cellphone alone, he says. And if you?re using your phone during a class or while working with a trainer, that?s just rude.

Bottom line: If you weren?t actually working out during your workout, you can?t claim a workout.

Instead of crunches, do planks

Corey Scott knows why people do crunches, those truncated sit-ups meant to target abdominal muscles. They want a ?six-pack,? a washboard stomach, that shrink-wrapped look.

But the real way to get the shrink-wrapped look is to shrink the wrap. That requires improving nutrition and cutting calories.

?We all have the same musculature,? says Scott, owner of Corey Scott Personal Training Studios in Prairie Village, Kan. ?It?s just that we have to reduce down to it. The six-pack starts in the kitchen. Or better yet, the grocery store.?

If your goal is to strengthen your ?core,? which means the torso muscles, including stomach, back and hips, your impulse is right on, Scott says. But crunches aren?t good for that, either.

Few people keep perfect form during crunches, he says. And it gets worse as they try to increase repetitions. Most notably they will arch their backs, a strain that can lead to injury.

A simple and effective core exercise is the plank, Scott says. It involves a host of abdominal, back and stabilizer muscles.

Lie on the floor face down and raise your body, ?balancing? on your forearms and toes. Hold for 20 seconds or more, lower your body to the floor and repeat several times. Be sure to keep your rear from poking up or sagging.

For a more advanced plank, place your forearms on an exercise or stability ball.

Instead of rote cardio routines, do interval training

Cynthia Kernodle gives certain people credit ? at least they?re not sitting at home on the couch ? but still it?s disturbing: ?I see the same people on a piece of cardio equipment like an elliptical machine or stationary bike, doing the same thing every time, at the same level.

?It?s better than being sedentary, but they?re not going to change their bodies or increase their aerobic fitness.?

Several problems: The body gets accustomed to long stretches of routine exercise, and fitness doesn?t improve; you increase your risk for repetitive motion injuries; and workouts lack mental focus. They?re boring.

Two solutions, says Kernodle, owner of Choices Personal Training:

If you perform your cardio at the gym, spend shorter amounts of time on each of several machines: elliptical, treadmill, bike.

And switch to interval training, which means alternating periods of high-intensity and low-intensity exercise. The latter are also called rest intervals (but that doesn?t mean to stop).

Intensity is pushing yourself hard to maximum effort, which is a different level for different people. Think of sprinting, running as hard as you can, followed by jogging. Or increase the slope or resistance on a cardio machine for a time, then lower it.

?Even doing that for 30 seconds and then backing off for recovery is going to make changes,? Kernodle said. ?Otherwise your muscles just become immune to your exercise, and they quit changing.?

Instead of bicep curls, do pull-ups or assisted pull-ups

No matter how toned or bulky you?d like your biceps to be, John Benz has a message for the bicep-curl fans among us: ?Way too much time is dedicated to that tiny muscle.?

Benz realizes that the bicep curl, lifting a hand-held weight by bending the elbow, is a hallowed weight-training maneuver. But the time would be better spent doing pull-ups, he says.

Gripping a bar and lifting your body weight will give you great biceps plus recruit an array of muscles in the back and elsewhere. It?s also more aerobic and will improve your grip, forearms and shoulder stability.

Can?t do one? Ask a friend to grasp your ankles with both hands and provide just as much support as is needed for you to lift your body and get your head above the bar, Benz says. Or, at first, stand on a chair or stool and approximate a free-hanging pull-up.

And if you?re too old school to completely abandon bicep curls?

?Less than 3 minutes,? Benz says. Hit them fast, intensely, and move on.?

By now you?re picking up on a general theme here: For fitness and function, choose exercises that work large and multiple muscle groups rather than those that attempt to target specific muscles.

Instead of leg holds, do alternating leg exercises

Our legs contain the body?s biggest muscles. They?re heavy. That?s one reason leg-hold exercises can cause injury, Kernodle says.

For leg holds, people lie on their backs and with their legs straight, raise them to a right angle with the floor, then lower them to about 10 inches from the ground, hovering there as long as possible.

This is meant as an abdominal exercise, with the legs serving as dead weight. But remember the crunch? Similar issue.

?You see people?s backs arching away from the mat or the bench,? she says. ?Really their lower back is taking the strain, and the abdominals aren?t working.?

Anyone with chronic lower back pain shouldn?t do leg holds, Kernodle says. Others risk injury unless they maintain perfect form, with the full spine against the floor.

Here are a couple of alternatives:

Lying on the floor face up, bend the right leg at the knee and keep the right foot on the floor. Extend the left leg and raise it off the floor, hold for several seconds, and return the left leg to the floor. Make sure you don?t push your right foot against the floor, which recruits the right hamstring rather than the abdominals. Then switch legs.

Now, lying face up, arms at your sides, position your legs as though sitting in a chair, thighs at a right angle to the ground and knees bent. Lower one leg to the ground and return to the starting position. Do the same with the other leg.

If you find yourself arching your back, place your hands, face down to the floor, under your rear.

Instead of overhead shoulder lifts, do scaptions

Scott was at a fitness convention when a physical therapist asked a group of trainers whether they instruct their clients to do shoulder presses and other overhead weight-lifting routines for shoulder strength. Most hands shot up.

?Stop it,? the therapist said. ?I?m tired of trying to fix all these patients with messed up shoulders.?

Pushing heavy weights above the head is a staple of gym work, but be wary of injury, Scott says. Especially as people age, such weight training can damage shoulder joints and tendons. A common term is ?shoulder impingement syndrome.?

Try scaptions as an alternative, he says.

With light to moderate weights in each hand, place your arms about even with your front pockets. Now raise the weights to just below shoulder height, then lower them. Your arms are angled rather than straight at your sides or straight in front.

3 Examples of How Small Business Ownership Enhances ...

Hello! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for my updates. You may also follow me on Twitter.

I?ve blogged previously about how business blogging has enhanced my life and how to use social media as personal development tools. Today, I?d like to share three examples of people who are increasing their confidence and self-esteem through small business ownership.

Maslow's hierarchy

These are real people, so I am not using their real names.

  1. Caroline. As the leader of the Indie Social Community, I made an executive decision that participants must use their real name and a photo of them at their profile page. Not only does this virtually eliminate spam, but it also helps people be successful.

Caroline emailed me to ask if I could make an exception for her because she thought she was not photogenic enough to use a picture of herself.

I called Caroline and explained why I thought her photo was important, not just for the site, but also for her business. I shared some of my thoughts on community leadership, and soon after, Caroline created a Profile Page using a picture of herself smiling. Today, Caroline is being welcomed into the community, and is using one of her best assets ? her smile ? to engage people and nurture meaningful business and personal relationships.

  2. Tobie. Tobie came to me a few months ago almost in tears because she could not figure out where her confidence had gone. She?d had a successful career as an executive assistant in a past life, but now that she had her own business, she didn?t have a boss to stand behind anymore.

In her prior professional life, Tobie always represented herself as representing her boss, thus deflecting the focus away from her as a person. Now that Tobie has her own business, those days are over.

Since we talked, Tobie has begun to put herself out there ? and guess what comes with her? Her products! She blogs consistently and has even been a guest on a podcast (not mine, so don?t go looking ?.).

  3. Lily. Because of cruel comments hurled at her in elementary school, Lily was convinced that loading a photo of herself to her website would turn people off and prevent them from buying her products. Over time however, she began to see that others were gaining business ground in part because they displayed their photographs wherever they went online.

Lily could tell that, when a person used their picture, they enjoyed more engagement and influence. She didn?t want to miss out, so over time, she came to accept that while some people may consider the color of her skin to be an issue, whatever they think is their issue, not hers.

Lily now confidently displays her photograph at her website, Twitter and everywhere else she connects online, and she does it without a second thought. Lily tells me that she remains convinced that she loses business because of her color, saying

I know some people don?t want to do business with me because of my color, but that will happen anyway, no matter what I do. Today, I think I earn more business than I lose because people can sense how friendly I am when they visit my website and see my smiling face.

How?s that for pushing fear out of the way!?

And what?s the common denominator here? These women are leading businesses! (Well, ?women? is also a common denominator, but that?s for another blog post!)

Were it not for Caroline?s, Tobie?s, and Lily?s businesses, all of this self acceptance and confidence may not be happening. Sure, making a profit will always be a central focus of entrepreneurship. But there?s so much more to it than that.

?> It?s about stepping up to the plate when you?re terrified of what others will think, like Caroline.

?> It?s about learning how not to hide behind the accomplishments of others, and being proud and outwardly communicative about your own, like Tobie.

?> It?s about putting yourself out there when you?ve previously been mercilessly teased and taunted because of the color of your skin, like Lily.

Question: Do you see yourself or someone you know in Caroline, Tobie, or Lily? How has your business enhances your confidence and self esteem? Tell us in the comments!

Exclusive: Lockheed lobbies anew for new Taiwan F-16s (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Lockheed Martin Corp is helping arm U.S. lawmakers for a renewed push to sell its new F-16 fighter jets to Taiwan, not just the Obama administration's planned $5.3 billion upgrade of old ones.

A Lockheed Martin official last week emailed an unsigned memo to lawmakers on Capitol Hill titled "Taiwan -- The Benefit of New F-16 C/Ds," two congressional staff members said.

Lockheed's memo to lawmakers was dated September 22, a day after the administration told Congress that it was offering Taiwan a $5.3 billion retrofit of 145 F-16 A/B models sold in the 1990s. Administration officials said a decision had not yet been made on Taiwan's 5-year-old request for 66 new F-16 C/D models valued at $8.3 billion.

Beijing calls U.S. arms sales to Taiwan the chief obstacle to better relations between the United States and China, now the world's biggest economies.

China's foreign minister urged the United States on Monday to reconsider its decision to upgrade the jets, saying it could harm ties between Washington and Beijing.

Beijing suspended military-to-military contacts with the United States for most of 2010 after the previous, $6.4 billion U.S. arms package for Taiwan. China regards U.S. arms sales to Taiwan as interference in its domestic affairs.

The Lockheed memo included "rebuttal points" to what Lockheed called the expected conclusion of a Pentagon report that the administration could use to try to defuse criticism of its decision not to release new F-16s to Taiwan.

Lockheed Martin neither confirmed nor denied having circulated the memo, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters. It said a sale of F-16s would benefit not only the company but generate more than 16,000 jobs in the United states over five to six years, citing a study it had commissioned.

"Any questions regarding the sale of new F-16s to Taiwan should be referred to the governments of Taiwan and the US," Laura Siebert, a Lockheed spokeswoman, added in an email.

The company, the Pentagon's largest supplier by sales, typically depicts itself as a bystander in the foreign arms-sale process, patiently awaiting government decisions.

The one-page memo highlighted what some experts consider flaws in Obama administration decision-making on the F-16s. The memo raised questions that could put administration policymakers on the spot at a scheduled U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Taiwan on October 4.

The issue is politically sensitive for President Obama. The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act requires Washington to provide for Taiwan's defense without regard to Beijing's sensitivities on the matter.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney accused Obama last week of having "caved" to China by denying Taiwan F-16 C/D models, calling this "yet another example of his weak leadership in foreign policy."

In the U.S. Congress, 47 of the 100 U.S. senators and 181 of the 435 members of the House of Representatives have written to Obama since May to urge him to sell to Taiwan at least 66 late-model F-16 C/D planes.

Advocates of new F-16 sales say they should be in addition to the upgrade of the old models.

The document distributed on Capitol Hill by Lockheed was based on the "expected conclusion" of the Defense Department report on the state of Taiwan's air power, and sought to refute it.

The classified Pentagon report itself was sent to Congress on September 22, the same day as the Lockheed memo, 20 months after a congressional mandate for its delivery, a third congressional official told Reuters.

"Taiwan cannot protect their F-16 aircraft or the runways from which they operate from the ballistic missile threat," the memo summarized the Pentagon report as finding, referring to how China might attack in any cross-strait conflict.

"So, new F-16 C/Ds would not contribute to their deterrent capability and are not relevant," the memo further summarized the report as having found.

But Taiwan has some of the best-protected, hardened aircraft shelters in the region, the memo argued. In addition, the self-ruled island is advancing the "state-of-the-art in rapid runway repair technology" and routinely practices using open roadway stretches for fighters' launch and recovery to curb dependence on airfields, it said.

The Lockheed memo also took aim at what it called an expected "red herring" conclusion of the Pentagon report. It described this as the idea that Taiwan needed an aircraft capable of short takeoffs and vertical landings, or STOVL, because of Chinese missiles' threat to Taiwan's runways.

Only two STOVL aircraft models have been developed -- the BAE AV-8 Harrier, which has been out of production since 1997, and Lockheed's own F-35B Joint Strike Fighter, which will not be available for export sales until the later part of this decade, the memo said.

Even if available today, the U.S. administration would most likely refuse the F-35B to Taiwan because of its advanced radar-evading capabilities, it said.

The F-35, the memo added, could be construed as introducing a new level of capability, something that would conflict with a joint communique signed by the United States and China in August 1982.

"If new F-16s are so irrelevant, why is China so vigorously opposed to their sale to Taiwan?" Lockheed's memo added in its rebuttal points.
